One of the most pleasant discoveries for newcomers is that Florida has no personal income tax. However, there is a state corporate tax. For more information, call Florida Department of Revenue at 595-5170.
In 1999 the 44-square block downtown business district had a property tax of 24.874 mills per $1,000 of assessed value.
Outside that area, the city rates were 22.874 mills per $1,000 of assessed value. In the unincorporated areas of the county it was 18.564 mills per $1,000 of assessed value.
There is a 7.5 percent sales tax on the retail sale or rental of tangible personal property, and no sales tax on groceries or medicines.
Boat Registration
If a person resides within the state for more than 90 days they are required to register their boat. Done at the Tax Collector's office there will be a $6 to $10 title fee plus a decal fee varying on the size of the boat. Lengths of less than six feet are $7.25, 65-100 ft. are $102.25, and mid-sized prices within that range.
